Espresso Roma 4201 University Way NE Seattle, Wa. 98105 (206) 632-6001
As with most of their stores, this Espresso Roma location is conveniently close to the local University's central campus. This is where you will often find me reading the newspaper, a book, or perhaps Tablet or The Stranger. I fell in love with Roma's coffee years ago, and I still prefer it over any other.
This store is in a dilapidated building in the heart of Seattle's University District. I'm not sure if the poor conditions are due to indifference on the part of the property owner, or possibly because of a lack of support from Roma's business leaders.
There are often a ton of fliers on the walls; sometimes there is art from locals, and one of the bathrooms is guaranteed to be out of order at all times. There is an Internet kiosk or two, in addition to wireless Internet access (not free). There is Miss Pac Man and at least one pinball machine. There is always music being played. Some baristas play the local radio station (KEXP 90.3) while others play CDs of their choosing.
This store is distinctly different from other Roma locations in a number of ways. The graffiti in the restrooms is a reflection of the visitors who make this store what it is. I love it. Other stores seem to be lacking this feature. The menu is severely limited compared to other stores. Here you're restricted to standard espresso drinks, drip coffee, and fresh baked pastries. (their lemon poppyseed muffins are THE BEST) Other stores offer many specialty drinks, juices, and foods such as soup and deli sandwiches. This store has two video cameras positioned towards the cash register. I have not seen video cameras in any other location.
